Region Description: The Canterbury region has remained ‘the granary of New Zealand’. 62.5% of the country’s wheat, 52.6% of the barley and 26% of oats was grown in north and mid-Canterbury. The Ashburton district alone produced 46.6% of the country’s wheat.

Region Description: Southland is mainland New Zealand’s southernmost region, lying between 44.6° and 46.7° latitude south. Southland is rich in natural resources. Its farmlands are highly productive, and it has large reserves of sub-bituminous coal and hydroelectric power. Swede and kale grown for supplementary livestock fodder are the main winter forage crops in Southland. The climate and good soils result in Southland having higher crop yields than in other areas of New Zealand.
