Region Description: The 'West Coast' generally refers to the narrow strip of land between the South Island's Southern Alps and the Tasman Sea. Geographically this area extends 650 km from Kahurangi Point in the north to Big Bay in the south and covers 2.3 million hectares.

A balanced combination of rain and sunshine and a varied terrain result in a temperate, productive climate. About 1,580 people work in the agriculture industry on the West Coast, about 1.5% of New Zealand's agricultural workers. The dairy farming sector is the dominant agricultural employer on the West Coast, with about 1,280 of the region's 1,580 agriculture workers. Beef cattle farming, mixed livestock, vegetable growing, and plant nurseries are smaller.

Region Description: The Canterbury region has remained ‘the granary of New Zealand’. 62.5% of the country’s wheat, 52.6% of the barley and 26% of oats was grown in north and mid-Canterbury. The Ashburton district alone produced 46.6% of the country’s wheat.

After the first large vineyard was planted near Christchurch in the 1970s, grape-growing expanded at Waipara and Burnham. About 4% of the nation's vineyards by area are in Canterbury. In 2012 north and mid-Canterbury had only 2% of the land used in New Zealand for horticultural crops, but about half the land used for growing peas and over one-third of that used for potatoes.

Region Description:The Central Otago wine region produces award-winning wines made from varieties such as the Pinot noir, Chardonnay, Sauvignon blanc, Merlot and Riesling grapes. It has an increasing reputation as New Zealand's leading Pinot noir region.

Growers have continued to specialise in crops, notably Brussels sprouts for which the area is well suited. Today North Otago is the main producer of this crop with two-thirds of, the total area in New Zealand and 73% of total production. Other major crops are early potatoes, lettuces, cauliflowers and carrots.

Southland Region

Region Description: Southland is mainland New Zealand’s southernmost region, lying between 44.6° and 46.7° latitude south. It forms a giant triangle, two sides being the South Island’s southern and south-western coasts, and the third extending across-country from Awarua Point in the west to near Waikawa Harbour in the south.

Southland is rich in natural resources. Its farmlands are highly productive, and it has large reserves of sub-bituminous coal and hydroelectric power. Crops grown include potatoes, carrots and parsnips. There has been some expansion into the area of brassica crops, such as cauliflower. Swede and kale grown for supplementary livestock fodder are the main winter forage crops in Southland. The climate and good soils result in Southland having higher crop yields than in other areas of New Zealand.
